We wanted to debunk some of the biggest fears about the recruiting landscape; the experience paradox, ~networking~, and .Here is some advice on how to tackle these common concerns.
The experience paradox.
You can’t get the job without the experience, but you cannot get the experience without the job. It’s like a never ending haunted house. The biggest concern we hear is that job-seekers constantly feel stuck in a loop where they are never “qualified” enough due to their lack of experience and the unrealistic expectations they face. However, you may be more job-ready than you may think… Sometimes you do have experience, just not in a traditional form. Whether that be through a club at your university, a summer internship, or even a self-project, oftentimes rather than looking for the exact criteria or number of years, a lot of those skills and tasks are transferable and often can help you bring a creative edge to a workforce. Beyond transferable skills, looking at potential, initiative, and fit can also help. If you feel like you are having a hard time fitting into a job’s criteria, chances are other candidates are as well. This is when it comes down to your personal brand and your own unique qualities.
~networking~
”It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” often floats around and whether you like it or not, it can be very true in most fields. Don’t worry, because you may already have connections and ties to some great people. If you go to a university or graduated, your vast alumni network can be a great point of contact as many alumni like hiring talent from the same schools as them. It can be even better if you are a part of organizations and clubs that they are a part of since that is a common background and conversation starter. Also, networking is often associated with just meeting people or talking to like-minded individuals, but it can be so much more. Rather than seeing it as exclusively for jobs or internships, you can also look for mentors and advice. Beyond who you know, there are many skills that you can learn and if you want to get into a certain field, it can be helpful to learn more about the field through academia, credentials, and immersing yourself.
